Our Blackset Race rims offer a significant upgrade over the Open Sport, featuring a welded seam for superior strength and a stronger, lighter profile that’s less prone to lateral flex. We utilize internal nipple washers designed explicitly for Sapim Polyax nipples, which feature smaller spoke holes, thereby significantly reducing the risk of rim cracking compared to outdated eyelet designs. These internal washers, unlike some generic options, ensure optimal performance. Weighing in at approximately 435g (a saving of 55g per rim, 110g per set over the 490g Open Sport), our rims achieve this strength with only a minimal 0.5mm internal width difference (15mm vs. Open Sport’s 15.5mm). The most critical advantage lies in the rim strength: our 24mm rim height creates a robust, almost triangular profile that provides superior lateral stiffness, a stark contrast to the Open Sport’s 16mm “box style” height. Developed in 2007, these rims have had a strong market presence since 2008, though the industry’s shift to road disc brakes is leading us to manage our significant rim brake inventory.
