Avid Shorty 4 Canti Cantilev er Brake Set w/ Bridge Wire
Has been inspected, Ultrasonic cleaned, and lubed. Ready to be used.
The Avid Shorty 4 cantilever brake set is compatible with any bicycle frame or fork that is specifically designed to use cantilever brakes or V-brakes (linear-pull brakes).
The key feature you need to look for on the frame and fork is the presence of cantilever brake bosses (also known as brake posts or studs). These are small, cylindrical posts brazed or welded onto the frame’s seat stays and the fork’s blades. The brake arms of the Avid Shorty 4 slide over these posts.
Here’s a breakdown of the type of bikes you’ll typically find with these mounts:
- Cyclocross Bikes: Cantilever brakes were the standard for cyclocross bikes for a long time before disc brakes became dominant. The design offers excellent mud clearance, which is essential for cyclocross racing.
- Older Mountain Bikes (MTBs): Many vintage and early-to-mid-2000s mountain bikes used either cantilever or V-brakes.
- Touring Bikes: These bikes often have cantilever mounts because they provide good stopping power with heavy loads and offer ample clearance for wide tires and fenders.
- Hybrid/Commuter Bikes: Some models, particularly older ones, are equipped with cantilever brake mounts.
- Gravel Bikes: While modern gravel bikes almost exclusively use disc brakes, some earlier models and custom-built frames might have cantilever mounts.
Important Compatibility Notes:
- Brake Lever Compatibility: Cantilever brakes require “short-pull” brake levers. These are the standard levers found on road, cyclocross, and some vintage touring bikes with drop handlebars. They are not compatible with “long-pull” levers, which are designed for V-brakes and are commonly found on most flat-bar mountain bikes. Using the wrong type of lever will result in poor braking performance.
- Frame and Fork Spacing: While most cantilever-compatible frames and forks will work, some very old or custom frames may have non-standard spacing between the brake bosses. The Avid Shorty 4 is a modern cantilever brake and is designed to fit the common spacing. Still, it’s always a good idea to check for compatibility if you have an especially old or unique frame.
- Tire Clearance: The design of cantilever brakes provides a lot of clearance, which is one of their main advantages. The Avid Shorty 4 is known for offering good clearance, making it suitable for frames that can accommodate wide tires and fenders.
