Here is a breakdown of the industry information
Mavic’s Market Position and the CXP Line
- Mavic: A French Innovator: Mavic is a storied French company with a long history of innovation in the cycling industry, particularly in rims and wheels. Its products have been used in professional racing for decades.
- The CXP Series: The CXP series (including the CXP-21) was part of Mavic’s line of “aero” rims from the 1990s and early 2000s. The “CXP” stood for “Competition eXPerience.” These rims were characterized by a shallow V-shape or medium-profile design, which was intended to provide a slight aerodynamic advantage over traditional box-section rims while remaining durable enough for training and everyday riding.
- Market Segment: The CXP-21 rim, and the wheels built with it, were generally positioned as a durable, reliable, and affordable option for a wide range of road cyclists. They were a common choice for:
- Training wheels: Their robust construction made them a popular choice for training and long-distance riding.
- OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) wheels: Many mid-range road bikes from the era came equipped with wheels built on CXP-21 rims.
- Enthusiast-level builds: Riders building their own bikes on a budget often chose CXP-21 rims for their balance of performance and value.

A little about the seller:
I’ve been in the cycling industry for more than 30 years (I know, that makes me old!). I’ve been a professional bicycle mechanic for most of those years, including working locally at Lee’s Cyclery before they became Trek Stores. Now I work from home as a Customer Success Manager for a software team. But I still love fixing up and working on bikes and riding them too!
Purchase from me with peace of mind. Not only can you trust my years of experience, but I will also fit you for the bike and provide any mechanical insight at the time of purchase.
