Description

At I Know A Guy Bicycles, our “Trusted Partners” are more than just brands—they are vetted small businesses that represent the heart and soul of the cycling industry.

I choose to partner with people who take immense pride in their craftsmanship and who live by the same rule my dad taught me back in his shop: “If you can’t do it right, don’t do it at all.” In a world of mass-produced, “good enough” gear, these partners are true gems. They prioritize quality and longevity over quick sales, ensuring that when I recommend a product to you, it’s a product I’d trust on my own family’s bikes.

Trusted Partner: Bicycle Wheel Warehouse

Bicycle Wheel Warehouse is designed to offer a new dimension in the online market for enthusiast riders, aiming to meet cyclists’ need for high-quality wheels at affordable prices. We specialize in offering wheels that use component specifications that make sense, rather than wheels assembled from miscellaneous parts.

Our wheels differ from many other wheels available online. All of our wheels are 100% built in-house by hand, checked, and rechecked for proper spoke tension and wheel trueness. Compare our wheels with those offered by other websites that often purchase wheels and parts at close-out auctions from overseas factories and repackage them for sale in the U.S. as quality products.

These are solid classic road wheels that will ride smooth and hold up for a really long time.

Description:

Ever hear the expression, “that person’s famous for being famous”?  The Mavic Open Sport rim is popular because it’s popular.  It’s a known quantity in a world diluted with over-hyped bicycle rims.  The Open Sport doesn’t claim to make you more “aero” because 2mm on a rim profile is really going to make a difference when you’ve got a 12 kt headwind, or offer “noticeably” more comfort because its 2mm wider from the rim’s centerline. The Mavic Open Sport offers an old school box styled rim; and in this case, that’s a good thing.  We don’t need to take a bunch of time comparing this rim to another, there’s not too many box styled rims anymore.  The few we’ve seen are noodles under tension or have junk sidewall tolerances such that they’re impossible to true under three tenths of a millimeter.  In summary, the Open Sport sells itself.  This rim works, it’s a great rim without pretension.

We are building these Mavic Open Sport rims up with your choice of 32 hole hub set options, laced three cross front and rear, using whatever spoke and nipples you select.  This lace pattern offers excellent lateral strength while still allowing each wheel to absorb a fair amount of road vibration.  All Shimano hubs feature a loose ball bearing, cup and cone mechanism.  Each hub set option has their respective weight listed in the short description in the dropdown menu.  Most of these hubs have an aluminum hub shell, steel axles, and steel freehubs, that will resist cassette bite and hold up for a super long time.  A few of the higher end ones have aluminum freehub bodies, Dura-Ace uses titanium.  The approximate wheel set weight varies, but expect about 2000g for the basic options combined.

Thanks for taking a moment to check out these wheels.

* All listed weights are based on an approximate average, actual weights may vary

*Wheels will ship with QR levers and Velox 16mm cloth rim tape.

Where is Your Wheel Set Weight?

Not all wheel weight is equal. This is an 1800g wheel set with a 32 / 32 (or 36/36) spoke count may built with strong, light weight  rims, spokes, and hubs, compared to a lot of other “race” wheel sets with lower spoke counts. When you lower a wheel set’s spoke count, you run the risk of decreasing durability, as well as lateral stiffness, (the wheels could flex and rub with the brakes).  So a lot of times the solution is to use a really heavy rim, which can result in wheels that tend to feel a dull, or lethargic.  These wheels start with the use of a superior rim profile with purposeful wall thickness.  So the rim is light weight, but not flimsy.  The utilization of 3D shaped internal stainless steel nipple washers that match Sapim’s Polyax nipples mean that where the rim is doing the most work, at each spoke hole, we’re increasing the surface area in which the work is conducted.  This reduces rim stress, reduces the likelihood of rim cracking, while promoting rim life.  Expect these wheels to feel better, and last longer than your current mid 15-1600g wheel set now.
