Industry Information:
- The Pinnacle of 10-Speed Mechanical: The RD-7900 was the flagship mechanical rear derailleur in Shimano’s product lineup from its release in 2008 until the introduction of the 11-speed 9000 series in 2012. It was designed to be the best-performing, most lightweight, and most durable rear derailleur available at the time.
- ** trickle-down technology:** The Dura-Ace 7900 series as a whole introduced a new aesthetic and several key features that would later trickle down to other groupsets like Ultegra and 105.
- Carbon and Lightweight Construction: A significant feature of the RD-7900 was its use of a carbon fiber cage (inner and outer plates). This was a major departure from the all-aluminum RD-7800 and was a direct response to competitor products from brands like SRAM and Campagnolo, who were already using carbon to reduce weight. The derailleur’s body and link plates were made from cold-forged aluminum to ensure rigidity and strength while keeping weight to a minimum (around 166 grams).
- Short Cage (SS): The “short cage” model, designated “SS,” was designed for use with a double crankset (2×10). It had a maximum cog size capacity of 28 teeth and a total capacity of 33 teeth, making it suitable for a wide range of road racing and enthusiast setups.
- New Aesthetics: The RD-7900 marked a new aesthetic direction for Dura-Ace. The polished silver finish of the 7800 series was replaced with a more subdued and modern “gray anodized” finish with polished accents.
Compatibility for the Dura-Ace RD-7900 is highly specific, as it was designed as part of a proprietary system.
- Shifters (The Most Critical Factor): The RD-7900 rear derailleur has a specific cable pull ratio that is only compatible with Shimano Dura-Ace ST-7900 STI shifters. While some sources claim limited compatibility with the older 7800 series shifters, and with some non-Dura-Ace 10-speed shifters (like those from the 5700 and 6700 series), this is not officially endorsed by Shimano and may result in suboptimal shifting. This lack of broad cross-compatibility is one of the most significant and well-known “quirks” of the 7900 series.
- Cassette: The derailleur is designed for use with Shimano 10-speed road cassettes (e.g., CS-7900, CS-6700, or CS-5700). It is not compatible with 11-speed cassettes. As a short cage model, its official maximum cog size is 28 teeth.
- Chain: The RD-7900 is designed to work with a Shimano 10-speed chain (CN-7900 or CN-6700). Using a chain from a different speed or a different brand may result in poor shifting.
- Drivetrain Configuration: As a short cage derailleur, it is optimized for use with a double crankset (2×10) and is not compatible with a triple chainring setup.
Construction: As a Dura-Ace component, it’s made from high-quality, lightweight aluminum with a distinctive polished silver finish. It’s often praised for its smooth, precise, and durable performance, and remains a popular choice for restoring or building high-end classic road bikes from that era.
