Industry Information:
The Shimano Dura-Ace ST-7801 STI shifters are one of the most significant and well-regarded components of the mechanical shifting era in road cycling. They are a definitive example of Shimano’s technology at its peak before the shift to hidden cables and 11-speed systems.
- Market Position: Flagship Mechanical: The ST-7801 shifters were the top-tier mechanical components of the Dura-Ace 7800 groupset (introduced around 2004). This groupset was the first of the major brands to successfully bring 10-speed shifting to the professional and enthusiast market. It represented the state-of-the-art in performance, precision, and lightweight construction at the time.
- The “7801” Difference: The “7801” designation indicates a minor revision to the original ST-7800 shifters. The 7801 and later 7803 (triple) versions typically featured minor ergonomic tweaks to the internal mechanism or hood shape, but functionally remained the same 10-speed system.
- Ergonomics and Aesthetics:
- External Cables: These shifters are defined by their externally routed shift cables (they exit the shifter and loop out from the side of the handlebar). This is a hallmark of the 9- and early 10-speed era and is a key aesthetic differentiator from later 6600/6700 and 7900 series, which hid the cables under the bar tape.
- Classic Silver Finish: The shifters featured a polished silver/chrome finish that is highly prized by collectors and enthusiasts for its classic, high-quality look.
- Crisp Shifting: The internal mechanism is famed for its highly tactile and “crisp” indexing, offering immediate and precise gear changes.
Compatibility
Compatibility for the ST-7801 is excellent within the Shimano road family, as it uses the widely compatible standard Shimano road pull ratio.
- Drivetrain Speeds: The shifters are strictly designed for 10-speed drivetrains. They are not compatible with 9-speed, 11-speed, or 12-speed components.
- Rear Derailleur: The ST-7801 uses the standard Shimano road pull ratio, making it compatible with:
- All Shimano 10-Speed Road Derailleurs: This includes Dura-Ace RD-7800, Ultegra RD-6600, 105 RD-5600, and Tiagra RD-4600.
- Most Shimano 9-Speed Road Derailleurs: The pull ratio is virtually identical, so a 10-speed shifter and 9-speed derailleur will often work together perfectly, as long as the rest of the drivetrain is 10-speed.
- NOT Compatible with: Dura-Ace RD-7900 or any Shimano Mountain Bike (MTB) derailleur (which uses a different pull ratio).
- Front Derailleur: The ST-7801 is the double (2×10) shifter. The left-hand lever is indexed for a double crankset (two chainrings) and is NOT fully compatible with a triple crankset. The triple version was the ST-7803.
- Brakes: The brake levers are designed for Super SLR-compatible road caliper brakes. They are optimized for the mechanical advantage of the Dura-Ace BR-7800 caliper brakes but will work perfectly with nearly any modern road caliper brake from Shimano or other brands. They are NOT compatible with V-brakes, mini-V brakes, or any disc brake system.
- Aftermarket Status: The ST-7801 shifters are highly valued in the aftermarket. They are sought after for high-end restorations of mid-2000s bikes and by riders who prefer the aesthetic and durability of the exposed shift cables over modern integrated systems.

I’ve been in the cycling industry for more than 30 years (I know, that makes me old!). I’ve been a professional bicycle mechanic for most of those years, including working locally at Lee’s Cyclery before they became Trek Stores. Now I work from home as a Customer Success Manager for a software team. But I still love fixing up and working on bikes and riding them too!
Purchase from me with peace of mind. Not only can you trust my years of experience, but I will also fit you for the bike and provide any mechanical insight at the time of purchase.
