Industry Description:
The Shimano Ultegra CS-6600 is a 10-speed road cassette, a key component of the venerable Ultegra 6600 groupset from the mid-2000s. The “12-25t” designation refers to its gear range, with the smallest cog having 12 teeth and the largest having 25.
Key Features and Compatibility:
- 10-Speed System: This cassette is designed exclusively for use with 10-speed drivetrains. It must be paired with a 10-speed chain (like the Shimano CN-6600 or CN-5600) and 10-speed shifters and derailleurs. It is not compatible with 9-speed, 11-speed, or 12-speed systems.
- Hyperglide (HG) Technology: Like other Shimano cassettes, the CS-6600 features Hyperglide technology. The cogs are specially shaped with strategically placed ramps and tooth profiles to facilitate smooth, rapid shifting under load.
- Freehub Compatibility: The CS-6600 cassette is designed to fit on a standard Shimano/SRAM-style freehub body. It can fit on both 8/9/10-speed freehubs and the wider 11-speed road freehubs (with the use of a 1.85mm spacer behind the cassette).
- Weight and Construction: The cogs are made of steel for durability, but some of the larger cogs may be mounted on an aluminum spider to reduce weight. The 12-25t is considered a “close ratio” or “racing” cassette, offering small jumps between gears for smooth cadence transitions.
- Dura-Ace 7800 Hubs: There is a known and specific compatibility issue with some older Shimano Dura-Ace FH-7800 hubs and WH-7800 wheels. Certain CS-6600 cassettes with 13-16 tooth smallest cogs will not fit properly on these hubs due to a different spline depth. The 12-25t version, however, generally does not have this problem.

A little about the seller:
I’ve been in the cycling industry for more than 30 years (I know, that makes me old!). I’ve been a professional bicycle mechanic for most of those years, including working locally at Lee’s Cyclery before they became Trek Stores. Now I work from home as a Customer Success Manager for a software team. But I still love fixing up and working on bikes and riding them too!
Purchase from me with peace of mind. Not only can you trust my years of experience, but I will also fit you for the bike and provide any mechanical insight at the time of purchase.
