Industry Description:

The Shimano Ultegra FC-6600/6603 crankset is a high-quality component from the mid-2000s, part of the 10-speed Ultegra 6600 groupset. This specific model is a triple crankset with chainrings sized at 52/39/30 teeth, making it an excellent choice for riders who need a wide range of gears, especially for climbing or loaded touring.

Key Features and Compatibility:

  • 10-Speed System: The crankset is optimized for 10-speed drivetrains. The chainrings and tooth profiles are designed to work seamlessly with a 10-speed chain (e.g., Shimano CN-6600). While it may physically work with an 11-speed chain, shifting performance on the front rings can be degraded due to the narrower chain.
  • Hollowtech II Technology: The FC-6600/6603 utilizes Shimano’s Hollowtech II system, where the bottom bracket axle is integrated with the drive-side crank arm. This design significantly increases stiffness and reduces weight compared to older square-taper or Octalink systems.
  • Bottom Bracket (BB): The Hollowtech II system requires an external bearing bottom bracket, such as the SM-FC6600, which is typically included with the crankset. These bottom brackets are threaded and designed to fit frames with a standard 68mm English bottom bracket shell.
  • Bolt Circle Diameter (BCD): This triple crankset uses a standard 130mm BCD for the large (52t) and middle (39t) chainrings, and a smaller 74mm BCD for the inner (30t) chainring. This makes it easy to find replacement chainrings if needed.
  • Chainline: The triple crankset has a slightly different chainline (the distance from the bike’s centerline to the midpoint of the chainrings) compared to a double crankset. For optimal shifting, it must be paired with a compatible triple front derailleur, such as the Shimano Ultegra FD-6603.
  • Cross-Compatibility: While designed for road bikes, the wide gear range of the triple setup makes this crankset suitable for cyclocross or gravel bike builds, particularly for riders who tackle steep climbs or carry gear. Its durable construction makes it a reliable choice for long-distance riding.
  • Crank Arm Length: The 172.5mm length is a very common size, suitable for a wide range of riders. Other lengths were also available (e.g., 170mm, 175mm).

A little about the seller:

I’ve been in the cycling industry for more than 30 years (I know, that makes me old!). I’ve been a professional bicycle mechanic for most of those years, including working locally at Lee’s Cyclery before they became Trek Stores. Now I work from home as a Customer Success Manager for a software team. But I still love fixing up and working on bikes and riding them too!

Purchase from me with peace of mind. Not only can you trust my years of experience, but I will also fit you for the bike and provide any mechanical insight at the time of purchase.
