The Shimano Ultegra BR-6500 is a classic dual-pivot side-pull caliper brake. As part of the 9-speed Ultegra 6500 groupset from the late 1990s/early 2000s, it’s known for its lightweight alloy construction and smooth, reliable stopping power. These brakes are a popular choice for vintage road bike restorations and retro builds.

Key Features and Compatibility:

  • Dual-Pivot Design: This design provides improved braking power and modulation compared to older single-pivot calipers.
  • Mounting: They are “center mount” brakes, meaning they attach to the frame and fork using a recessed nut.
  • Reach: The BR-6500 has a “short reach” with a range of 39-49mm, which is a standard for many road bikes of that era. This is an important measurement to check to ensure compatibility with your frame.
  • Brake Pads: The brakes use cartridge-style brake pads, which means you can replace just the pad inserts rather than the entire brake shoe. While the original Shimano pads may be difficult to find, many modern replacement pads (e.g., Kool Stop) are compatible and can offer improved performance.
  • Brake Levers: The BR-6500 calipers are designed for use with Shimano’s “Super SLR” brake levers, which were common on 9-speed road groupsets. While they will physically work with newer levers (e.g., from 10-speed or 11-speed groups), the cable pull ratio is different, which can result in a “mushy” or less effective feel. For best performance, they should be paired with their original-era levers like the ST-6500.

A little about the seller:

I’ve been in the cycling industry for more than 30 years (I know, that makes me old!). I’ve been a professional bicycle mechanic for most of those years, including working locally at Lee’s Cyclery before they became Trek Stores. Now I work from home as a Customer Success Manager for a software team. But I still love fixing up and working on bikes and riding them too!

Purchase from me with peace of mind. Not only can you trust my years of experience, but I will also fit you for the bike and provide any mechanical insight at the time of purchase.

Shipping information:

I ship USPS Ground.  I try to keep it simple. It will be packed very well, but if you see any damage to the box or Part, keep the box and packing material plus, take pictures. I do insure all parts that are shipped. In addition, if shipped out of Colorado, there is no Sales Tax. You can also combine shipping with multiple items.
