The Shimano Ultegra BR-6600 is a classic dual-pivot side-pull caliper brake that was part of the Ultegra 6600 groupset, a popular and well-regarded 10-speed road group from the mid-2000s. These brakes are a great option for a vintage road bike build or as an upgrade to a bike with lower-end calipers.
Key Features and Compatibility:
- Dual-Pivot Design: Like its predecessors, the BR-6600 utilizes a dual-pivot design for enhanced braking power and improved modulation over older single-pivot models. It’s often praised for its excellent stopping power and smooth feel.
- “Super SLR” Compatibility: These brakes are designed to work with Shimano’s “Super SLR” road levers. While they will physically work with older levers, they are optimized for the cable pull ratio of the 6600, 6500, and other compatible 10-speed or 9-speed levers. Mixing with much newer (11-speed or 12-speed) levers may result in a different feel and reduced braking performance.
- Standard Road Mount: The brakes are a standard “center mount” design, attaching to the frame and fork with a recessed nut.
