Industry Information:

The Shimano Ultegra FD-6600 front derailleur is a component from a significant era of road cycling, known for its durable and reliable performance. Here’s a breakdown of its industry information and compatibility.

Industry Information

  • Market Position: The FD-6600 was part of Shimano’s Ultegra 6600 groupset, which was a mainstay of the mid-2000s road bike market. Positioned as the company’s second-tier offering, it was the “workhorse” of the enthusiast and club-level racing world. It provided a perfect balance of the high-end technology from the Dura-Ace line with the durability and cost-effectiveness of a more accessible groupset.
  • 10-Speed Era: The FD-6600 was engineered for the new 10-speed drivetrains that were becoming the standard on mid-to-high-end road bikes. It was designed to work seamlessly with the narrower 10-speed chains and the wider spacing of 10-speed cassettes and cranksets.
  • “Double” Configuration: The FD-6600 model is specifically for double cranksets (two chainrings). This was the most common configuration for road racing and performance-oriented road bikes at the time. A separate model, the FD-6603, was made for triple cranksets.
  • Aesthetics: The FD-6600 featured a clean, understated aesthetic that was a hallmark of the 6600 groupset. It was available in both a silver and “Ice Gray” finish.

Compatibility

Compatibility is a crucial consideration for a front derailleur, as it must function seamlessly with several other components in the drivetrain.

  • Clamp Diameter (34.9mm): The “34.9 Clamp” refers to the diameter of the clamp that attaches the derailleur to the frame’s seat tube. This is a crucial, non-negotiable measurement. It must match the outer diameter of the frame. It is a standard modern size, but many bikes also use 31.8mm. The good news is that many clamp-on front derailleurs can be used with a shim to fit a smaller diameter seat tube.
  • Drivetrain Speeds: The FD-6600 is designed for 10-speed drivetrains only. Although it may technically be compatible with a 9-speed shifter, the cable pull ratio and cage width are optimized for a 10-speed chain. It is not compatible with 11-speed or 12-speed systems.
  • Chainring Configuration: The “Double” designation means the derailleur is designed for a 2×10 setup. The shape of the cage and the shifting action are optimized for the two chainrings of a double crankset. It should not be used with a triple crankset.
  • Crankset Compatibility: The FD-6600 is designed for use with Shimano’s FC-6600 series double crankset, which features a specific chainline (43.5mm) and a maximum tooth difference of 15 teeth between the large and small chainrings. While it may work with some other brands’ cranksets, a Shimano crankset is recommended for optimal shifting performance.
  • Shifter Compatibility: The front derailleur must be paired with a compatible shifter, such as a Shimano Ultegra ST-6600, ST-6603, or Dura-Ace ST-7800 shifter. The cable pull ratio of the shifter must match the front derailleur for smooth and reliable shifting.
  • Aftermarket Status: The Shimano 6600 series is no longer in production. The FD-6600 is now an aftermarket product, highly sought after for restoration projects and as a replacement part for a bike with a broken or worn-out front derailleur.
