Shimano Ultegra RD-6500 Long Cage 9-Speed Rear Derailleur

Has been inspected, Ultrasonic cleaned, and lubed. Ready to be used.

Inventory number: 0634 LS-T

Industry Information:

The Shimano Ultegra RD-6500 Long Cage rear derailleur is a versatile and reliable component from the turn of the millennium, specifically part of Shimano’s 9-speed Ultegra groupset (1997-2004). The “long cage” (GS) version is a critical distinction, as it was designed to accommodate a wider gear range than its short-cage (SS) counterpart.

This derailleur’s key purpose was to work with triple cranksets or with larger-tooth cassettes, making it ideal for touring bikes, endurance road bikes, or any setup where lower gears for climbing were needed. It has a total chain capacity of 37 teeth and is officially rated to handle a largest rear cog of up to 27 teeth, though many mechanics have found it can be adjusted to work with a 30-tooth cog or even larger with careful setup.

Compatibility

  • Shifters: The RD-6500 uses the standard Shimano cable pull ratio for its era. It is fully compatible with 9-speed Shimano road shifters, including the Ultegra ST-6510, Dura-Ace ST-7700, and 105 ST-5500 series. It is also compatible with most older 6-, 7-, and 8-speed Shimano shifters due to the consistent cable pull ratio.
  • Cassettes: While designed for 9-speed cassettes, its long cage allows for a wide range of ratios. It is not compatible with 10-speed or higher systems unless a third-party cable pull adapter is used, as the indexing in the shifter will not match the cassette and derailleur spacing.

A little about the seller:

I’ve been in the cycling industry for more than 30 years (I know, that makes me old!). I’ve been a professional bicycle mechanic for most of those years, including working locally at Lee’s Cyclery before they became Trek Stores. Now I work from home as a Customer Success Manager for a software team. But I still love fixing up and working on bikes and riding them too!

Purchase from me with peace of mind. Not only can you trust my years of experience, but I will also fit you for the bike and provide any mechanical insight at the time of purchase.
