Industry Information:
The Shimano Ultegra ST-6600R and ST-6603L STI (Shimano Total Integration) shifters were the benchmark road bike control levers for the mid-2000s, part of the legendary 10-speed Ultegra 6600 groupset. These levers are known for their smooth, ergonomic shape and “Hidden Cable” design, where the shift cables are routed neatly under the handlebar tape, a significant aesthetic and functional upgrade from previous generations.
Key Features and Compatibility:
- 10-Speed System: The “ST-6600R” (right) is a 10-speed shifter, while the “ST-6603L” (left) is a 3-speed shifter, designed to work with a triple crankset.
- Derailleur Compatibility: For optimal performance, these shifters must be paired with their corresponding 10-speed derailleurs:
- Rear Derailleur: A Shimano 10-speed road rear derailleur, such as the RD-6600 (short cage for double) or RD-6603 (long cage for triple). It is also compatible with other 10-speed Shimano road derailleurs from that era, including those from the Dura-Ace 7800 and 105 5600 series. It is not compatible with newer 10-speed Tiagra 4700 derailleurs, which use a different cable pull ratio.
- Front Derailleur: The “ST-6603L” triple shifter is specifically designed for a triple front derailleur, like the FD-6603.
- Brake Compatibility: These levers use Shimano’s “Super SLR” brake pull ratio. They are compatible with most standard road caliper brakes and cantilever brakes. They are not compatible with V-brakes or linear-pull brakes, which require a different cable pull ratio (often referred to as “long pull”).
- Ergonomics and Design: The ST-6600 series was praised for its smooth lever action and comfortable hoods, which are still popular for vintage road bike enthusiasts. The internal cable routing was a major feature, cleaning up the cockpit for a more professional look.
- Maintenance: The shifters contain a complex internal mechanism. While they are generally durable, they can sometimes be prone to sticky shifting if the grease inside hardens over time. This can often be fixed by a careful cleaning and re-lubrication.

Purchase from me with peace of mind. Not only can you trust my years of experience, but I will also fit you for the bike and provide any mechanical insight at the time of purchase.
