I Went to Titanium Heaven. ✨

(Moots Steamboat Tour)

🛠️ The Factory Floor: “The Wrench” Engineering Tour

Unlike high-volume corporate assembly lines, Moots treats frame building with a rigorous, one-at-a-time methodology. Every single frame is accompanied by a physical tracking document known as the “Yellow Card.” As a frame moves through each workstation, the responsible specialist must initial their task upon completion, ensuring absolute accountability from raw metal to the final pass.

Step 1: Mitering and Prep

The process begins with seamless 3/2.5 aerospace-grade titanium tubing. Titanium is notoriously difficult to manipulate, requiring dedicated tooling and sharp cutters to miter the tubes with micro-millimeter precision. The tube interfaces must fit together so tightly without gaps that they can practically hold themselves together before any heat is applied.

Step 2: The Purge and Weld

Because titanium reacts violently with oxygen when heated—which makes the weld brittle and prone to cracking—the entire welding process requires a strict argon gas purge. Tube interiors are completely flooded with argon gas while the welder, working inside an immaculate bay, uses a specialized gas shield lens on their TIG torch. Moots welders are famous for their signature “stacked dimes” aesthetic: double-pass welds that are as structurally bombproof as they are beautiful.

Step 3: Alignment and Finishing

Once welding is complete, the frame is placed on a massive, precision-ground steel alignment table. Mechanics check the head tube, bottom bracket, and rear dropouts to ensure tracking is true to a fraction of a millimeter. From there, the frame moves to the finishing department. Here, the titanium undergoes shot-peening or meticulous hand-brushing, followed by their signature anodized or etched finishing styles (such as the Apex or Topo designs).
