Overhauling a bolt-on rear bicycle hub requires some tools and knowledge, but it’s achievable at home with proper preparation. Here’s a general guide to get you started:

Gather your tools:
✅ Cone wrenches: Match the size of your hub’s cone nuts.
✅ Spoke wrench: To adjust spoke tension if needed (optional).
✅ Cassette removal tool: For removing the cassette or freehub body.
✅ Lockring tool: Specific to some cassette types.
✅ Pawl grease: A high-quality, specific grease for pawl mechanisms.
✅ Hub grease: Lightweight grease for bearings.
✅ Cleaning rags: Lint-free for wiping away old grease and grime.
✅ Degreaser: For stubborn grime buildup (optional).

Work in a clean and organized space.
Shift your bike into the highest gear (largest cog).
Secure your bike in a stand for easy access to the rear wheel.

Overhauling the Hub:
✅ Remove the wheel: Detach the brakes and quick-release (or axle nuts) to remove the rear wheel.
✅ Disassemble the cassette: Depending on your hub system, use the cassette removal tool and potentially a lockring tool to remove the cassette or freehub body.
✅ Unscrew the locknuts: Use the cone wrenches to loosen and remove the locknuts on both sides of the hub.
✅ Remove the cones and bearings: Carefully slide out the cones, keeping track of the order (inner and outer) and noting any loose bearings.
✅ Clean the components: Degrease and thoroughly clean all the hub parts (cones, bearings, axle) with rags. For stubborn grime, you can use a dedicated bike cleaner or degreaser.
✅ Inspect for damage: Look for any signs of wear, cracks, or pitting on the cones, bearings, or axle. If you find any damage, replace those parts before reassembling.
✅ Apply new grease: Use a thin layer of hub grease on the inner surfaces of the cones and the axle where the bearings sit. Apply pawl grease to the pawl mechanism according to your hub’s manual (if applicable). 8. Reassemble the hub: Carefully place the bearings back into the cones, ensuring proper alignment. Slide the cones with bearings back onto the axle. Tighten the cones with the cone wrenches gradually and alternately, feeling for smooth bearing rotation without excessive play or binding.
✅ Reinstall the locknuts: Tighten the locknuts securely with the cone wrenches, ensuring the cones are correctly seated.
✅ Reattach the cassette: Use the cassette and lockring tools (if needed) to reinstall the cassette or freehub body according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
✅ Reinstall the wheel: Put the wheel back into the frame, reconnect the brakes, and adjust the quick release (or axle nuts) for proper tension.
✅ Spin the wheel and check for smooth rotation: There should be minimal resistance and no grinding noises.
✅ Shift through the gears: Ensure smooth gear changes without any slipping or hesitation.
✅ Fine-tune spoke tension (optional): If needed, use a spoke wrench to adjust spoke tension for a perfectly centered and true wheel.

By following these steps carefully, you can successfully overhaul your bolt-on rear bicycle hub and ensure smooth, safe rides for miles to come.
