To inspect your bicycle’s bottom bracket, you must remove the cranks. This can be done with a crank puller, which is a special tool that is available at most bike shops. Once the cranks are removed, you can see the bottom bracket bearings and spindle.
Things to look for:
✅ Play: Check for any play in the bearings. To do this, grab the spindle and try to move it back and forth. If there is any play, the bearings need to be replaced.
✅ Corrosion: Inspect the bearings and spindle for any signs of corrosion. If you see any rust or other corrosion, the bottom bracket needs to be replaced.
✅ Grease: Make sure that the bearings are properly greased. If the grease is dry or dirty, the bearings must be cleaned and regreased.
If you find any of the above problems, you must replace the bottom bracket. This is a relatively simple job that can be done at home with the right tools. However, if you are uncomfortable doing it, you can take your bike to a bike shop.
Here are some additional tips for inspecting your bicycle’s bottom bracket:
✅ Listen for noise: If you hear any creaking or grinding noises when you pedal, it could be a sign that the bottom bracket needs to be serviced.
✅ Check for chain slippage: If your chain slips frequently, it could indicate that the bottom bracket is worn out.
✅ Inspect the bottom bracket shell: If the bottom bracket shell is cracked or damaged, the bottom bracket will need to be replaced.
If you are unsure whether or not your bottom bracket needs to be replaced, it is always best to err on the side of caution and take it to a bike shop.

My passion for bikes started when my parents opened a shop in the 1980s called Parker Bikes (we were located in Parker, Colorado). My love for cycling has continued since then, in my work and with my hobbies of road cycling and mountain biking. After my parents’ shop closed, I worked for other bike shops (including Lee’s Cyclery in Fort Collins), where I built and sold bikes, fixed and tuned up bikes, and managed inventory.
I love working on bikes and want to share my passion for cycling with others. So, next time you’re talking cycling with someone and wondering how to get started or where to go from here, you can think, “I know a guy!”
