This is the most accurate way to check chain wear. The tool has a gauge that measures the amount of stretch in the chain. A new chain will have a reading of 0%, while a worn chain will have a reading of 0.75% or more for 6-10 speed chains and 0.5% or more for 11-13 speed chains. Next Video: https://youtu.be/vPHNfQhV4_4.
Using a ruler or tape measure
This is a less accurate way to check chain wear, but it can be done if you don’t have a chain wear indicator tool. To do this, measure the distance between 12 consecutive pins on the chain. A new chain will measure exactly 12 inches. If the chain measures more than 12 1/16 inches, it is worn and should be replaced.
The “lift test.”
This is a quick and easy way to check chain wear. To do this, shift your bike into the smallest cog on the rear cassette and the largest chainring on the front chainring. Then, try to lift the chain off of the chainrings. If the chain lifts off easily, it is worn and should be replaced.

My passion for bikes started when my parents opened a shop in the 1980s called Parker Bikes (we were located in Parker, Colorado). My love for cycling has continued since then, in my work and with my hobbies of road cycling and mountain biking.
