✅ Visual inspection. Look for any signs of damage, such as bent or broken components, rust, or missing screws.
✅ Shift through the gears. Ensure that the shifters shift smoothly and accurately through all the gears.
✅ Check the cable tension. The cable tension controls how much force is applied to the derailleurs when you shift gears. If the cable tension is too high, the shifters will be difficult to shift. The shifters will not shift smoothly if the cable tension is too low. You can check the cable tension by using a cable tension gauge.
✅ Clean and lubricate the shifters. A dirty or dry shifter will not shift as well as a clean and lubricated shifter. You can clean the shifters with a mild soap and water solution. Then, lubricate the shifters with a light oil or lubricant.

My passion for bikes started when my parents opened a shop in the 1980s called Parker Bikes (we were located in Parker, Colorado). My love for cycling has continued since then, in my work and with my hobbies of road cycling and mountain biking. After my parents’ shop closed, I worked for other bike shops (including Lee’s Cyclery in Fort Collins), where I built and sold bikes, fixed and tuned up bikes, and managed inventory.
