Here are the steps on how to adjust cable tension for a Shimano Ultegra derailleur:
✅ Shift the derailleur to the largest cog on the cassette.
✅ Locate the barrel adjuster on the derailleur housing. It is a small, cylindrical adjuster with a flat head.
✅ Use a 2.5mm Allen wrench to turn the barrel adjuster clockwise. This increases cable tension and moves the derailleur closer to the cassette.
✅ Shift the derailleur to the smallest cog on the cassette.
✅ If the derailleur is not able to shift to the smallest cog, turn the barrel adjuster counterclockwise. This will decrease the cable tension and move the derailleur away from the cassette.
✅ Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the derailleur is able to shift smoothly to all of the cogs on the cassette.
Here are some tips for adjusting cable tension:
✅ Make small adjustments with the barrel adjuster. It is better to make too many small adjustments than to make one big adjustment and have to start over.
✅ Be sure to shift the derailleur through all of the gears after making an adjustment. This will help to ensure that the derailleur is properly adjusted.
✅ If you are having trouble adjusting the cable tension, you may want to take your bike to a qualified bike mechanic.
Here are some common problems that can occur when adjusting cable tension:
✅ The derailleur does not shift smoothly to all of the gears.
✅ The derailleur shifts too easily or too hard.
✅ The derailleur rubs against the chain or the cassette.
If you are experiencing any of these problems, you may need to adjust the cable tension. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully and make small adjustments until the problem is resolved.

My passion for bikes started when my parents opened a shop in the 1980s called Parker Bikes (we were located in Parker, Colorado). My love for cycling has continued since then, in my work and with my hobbies of road cycling and mountain biking. After my parents’ shop closed, I worked for other bike shops (including Lee’s Cyclery in Fort Collins), where I built and sold bikes, fixed and tuned up bikes, and managed inventory.
I love working on bikes and want to share my passion for cycling with others. So, next time you’re talking cycling with someone and wondering how to get started or where to go from here, you can think, “I know a guy!”
