Steps:
✅ Loosen the faceplate bolts. These are the bolts that secure the handlebars to the stem. Use the appropriate Allen wrench and loosen them slightly, but don’t remove them entirely.
✅ Loosen the stem binder bolt. This bolt is located on the top of the stem and secures it to the steerer tube. Use the socket wrench to loosen it, but don’t remove it entirely.
✅ Tilt the handlebars to the side. This will expose the stem bolt underneath the top cap. Loosen this bolt with the appropriate Allen wrench.
✅ Remove the top cap. This cap sits on top of the steerer tube and protects the headset bearings. You may need to tap it gently with the rubber mallet to loosen it.
✅ Pull the stem out of the steerer tube. This may require some force, especially if it has been in place for a long time. You can use a rubber mallet to tap it gently from the bottom.
✅ Clean the steerer tube and inside of the stem. Remove any dirt or grease that has accumulated.
✅ Apply grease to the steerer tube and inside of the new stem. This will help to prevent corrosion and ensure smooth operation.
✅ Insert the new stem into the steerer tube. Make sure it is fully seated and aligned properly.
✅ Tighten the stem binder bolt. This should be done snugly, but don’t overtighten it.
✅ Replace the top cap and tighten the top cap bolt.
✅ Realign the handlebars and tighten the faceplate bolts. Make sure they are tightened evenly.
✅ Test the stem for any play or looseness. If there is any play, adjust the binder bolt accordingly.

Additional tips:
✅ Take pictures of the stem and headset before you remove anything. This can be helpful for reference when reassembling everything.
✅ Be careful not to damage the headset bearings.
✅ If you are unsure about any of the steps, it is best to consult a professional mechanic.
✅ There are different types of quill stems available, so be sure to choose one compatible with your bike.
