The cables and housing on your bicycle transmit your input to the bike’s components, such as the derailleurs and brakes. If these cables are worn or damaged, they can cause shifting and braking problems. https://youtu.be/LOD0sHd_sEI
Here are some of the reasons why it is important to inspect your bicycle’s cables and housing:
✅ To ensure smooth shifting and braking. When worn or damaged, cables can cause friction, making shifting and braking difficult. This can be dangerous, especially if you are riding in traffic.
✅ To prevent accidents. If your cables are not properly lubricated, they can become stiff and difficult to operate. This can lead to accidents, such as a missed shift or a brake failure.
✅ To extend the life of your components. Worn cables and housing can strain your bike’s components, shortening their lifespan. By inspecting and replacing your cables and housing regularly, you can help to keep your components working properly for longer.
Here are some tips for inspecting your bicycle’s cables and housing:
✅ Check for fraying or kinks. If you see any fraying or kinks in the cables, they need to be replaced.
✅ Check for rust or corrosion. Rust and corrosion can make cables stiff and difficult to operate. The cables must be cleaned and lubricated if you see any rust or corrosion.
✅ Check the housing for cracks or splits. Cracks or splits in the housing can allow dirt and moisture to enter, which can cause the cables to corrode. If you see any cracks or splits, the housing needs to be replaced.
Inspecting your bicycle’s cables and housing every month or two is a good idea. If you ride in wet or dirty conditions, you may need to inspect them more often.

My passion for bikes started when my parents opened a shop in the 1980s called Parker Bikes (we were located in Parker, Colorado). My love for cycling has continued since then, in my work and with my hobbies of road cycling and mountain biking. After my parents’ shop closed, I worked for other bike shops (including Lee’s Cyclery in Fort Collins), where I built and sold bikes, fixed and tuned up bikes, and managed inventory.
I love working on bikes and want to share my passion for cycling with others. So, next time you’re talking cycling with someone and wondering how to get started or where to go from here, you can think, “I know a guy!”
