My latest used bicycle purchase was a real lesson in what not to do. I found a Greg LeMond (Made by Trek) road bike with Bontrager wheels listed for what seemed like a steal and, in my excitement, I rushed to buy it without a proper inspection. The seller’s story was convincing, and the bike looked great from a distance, but the moment I got it home, the problems started to surface. The bottom bracket was shot, the head tube bearings were completely seized, and the “good” tires were dry-rotted and falling apart. The total cost of repairs quickly exceeded what I had paid for the bike, turning my great deal into a massive disappointment. This experience taught me to slow down and meticulously check for red flags before handing over any cash. Never again will I let the thrill of a good price blind me to the hidden issues lurking in a used bicycle.
