Bike Shop Tune-Up Pagages? Is Your Bike Shop Ripping You Off? (Tune-Up Secrets)
With the new season approaching, it’s time to give your trusty steed some TLC! Here are 5 essential things you should do to your bike before hitting the road again:
1. Give it a deep clean: Dust, grime, and chains are your bike’s worst enemies. Wash the frame and components thoroughly with a bike-specific cleaner and degreaser. Pay special attention to the drivetrain (chain, cassette, derailleurs) and brake areas. Afterward, remember to lubricate the chain with a good lube for your riding style.
2. Check your tires: Inspect the tires for cracks, wear, and embedded objects. Depending on your weight and riding conditions, ensure proper air pressure. Consider replacing worn-out tires for optimal grip and safety.
3. Tune up the brakes and drivetrain: Shifting should be smooth and precise, and brakes should respond promptly and evenly. Adjust cables if necessary, clean and lubricate components, and replace worn-out brake pads or chains. Ensure your gears are indexing correctly.
4. Lubricate all moving parts, including the headset, bottom bracket, and pedals. Use the appropriate lubricants to avoid friction and wear and tear.
5. Inspect and tighten bolts and components: Loose bolts can compromise safety and affect performance. Check and tighten all bolts on the frame, handlebars, stem, Seatpost, wheels, etc. Look for any cracks or damage in components and address them before riding.
Bonus tip: Upgrade your gear! Consider investing in new accessories like lights, fenders, or a bike computer for a more comfortable and enjoyable ride. Also, Polish and Ceramic coat your bike.
By following these steps, you can ensure your bike is in top shape for the new season, maximizing your riding experience and minimizing the risk of breakdowns or accidents. Remember, a well-maintained bike is a safe and happy bike!

My passion for bikes started when my parents opened a shop in the 1980s called Parker Bikes (we were located in Parker, Colorado). My love for cycling has continued since then, in my work and with my hobbies of road cycling and mountain biking. After my parents’ shop closed, I worked for other bike shops (including Lee’s Cyclery in Fort Collins), where I built and sold bikes, fixed and tuned up bikes, and managed inventory.
I love working on bikes and want to share my passion for cycling with others. So, next time you’re talking cycling with someone and wondering how to get started or where to go from here, you can think, “I know a guy!”
